Subaru Impreza

Introduced in 1993, the Subaru Impreza provided all-wheel drive for a compact car to be sold in North America. Front-wheel drive versions for other parts of the world were later discontinued. The boxer engine inline with its transmission provides for a lower center of gravity, minimizing any tendency to roll, thus making the Impreza a truly safe, drivable compact.

Subaru Impreza (red)The first generation (1993- 2000) included the Impreza CG, the Impreza GF, and the Impreza GM, offerings in the coupe, sedan and wagon categories of vehicles.

The second generation (2000-2007) Impreza GD and Impreza GG came forth as compact sedans and wagons

In the third generation (2008 to present) the Impreza GE, the Impreza GH, and the Impreza GR presented as compact sedans and 4-door hatchback wagons had a number of different engine and transmission arrangements. In recent model years, the Subaru WRX has provided for a higher performance version of the Impreza.

The Impreza has come to mean outstanding control and safety in a compact car. The Subaru symmetrical all-wheel drive provides for better balance, quicker response, and efficiency in design, features missing in some other compacts.

The advantages of the unique Subaru Boxer Engine: 1) Horizontal opposed design where half the pistons move in 180-degree opposition to the other half, thus eliminating much of the usual engine vibration. 2) Durable construction naturally follows from the rigidity inherent in the horizontal design as compared to in-line or V-aligned piston arrangements, and 3) A lower center of gravity is achieved where the weight of the engine can be placed at a level much lower than that of in-line or V-aligned engines, all contribute to smoother operation, increased durability, and greater agility.

Impreza comes with a variety of engine sizes. In the Japanese market it may have a 1.5 liter, a 2.0 liter, or a 2.0 liter supercharged engine. In the North American market, 2.5 liter engines are available.

Other features in the current Impreza include: 1) A touch screen navigation system which converts to a DVD screen when the vehicle is parked. 2) A 10- speaker audio system which provides wrap-around music and iPod® connection while getting about. 3) Optional roof carrier bars, a rarity in compact cars. 4) Bluetooth® hands-free capability for safe communication. 5) Heated front seats to bring comfort in chilly weather. 6) A windshield De-icer as part of a much appreciated all-weather package.
